Quick Analysis

The Quick Analysis feature helps you quickly troubleshoot problems and locate key information in your network based on device and port data based on various inputs such as MAC/IP addresses, port indices and hostnames.

Quick Analysis button

You will find the 'Quick Analysis' icon in the toolbox, on the right-hand side of the screen, or in the top-right if the toolbox is already open. Click this icon to reveal the Quick Analysis interface.

As you'll notice, the interface consists of various "widgets" that allow you to analyze the network design, the actual network state, or both, based on various types of inputs.

Quick Analysis widgets

This article goes over some general concepts and explains each widget in detail.

"Design" and "Actual state"

This is a key concept in Quick Analysis. Widgets will show you information based on the network design, information based on the actual state of the network, or both. See Glossary for more information.

Widgets

As stated before, each Quick Analysis widget operates on a simple principle: you enter your search criteria, and the widget displays information based on those inputs. Once the results are displayed, most widgets allow you to scroll vertically to view additional information.

Port state

This widget allows you to quickly check the actual state of a switch port based on the switch name and port index. Once either of the fields gain focus, a dropdown will appear with the available switches and ports. If the port you're looking for does not appear in the dropdown, it means that this switch and/or port has not been reported on by the On-Site appliance. Note that a switch, in order to be reported on, must be registered in the network design.

Port state

Device by IP address / MAC address / hostname

These widgets let you inspect both the network design and the actual state of a device based on its IP address, MAC address, or hostname.

By IP address

Device by port

This widget takes a switch and port index similar to the "Port state" widget, but instead of showing the actual state of the port, it shows the device connected to that port (if any) according to the network design.

Resetting widgets

To quickly reset all widgets to their initial state (empty), click "Reset all widgets" in the top-right corner of the Quick Analysis interface. Results and search criteria will be cleared.

Analysing devices and addresses

In various places across the application you will find the 'Quick Analysis' icon next to, for example, IP and MAC addresses. Clicking this icon will open the Quick Analysis interface with one or more widgets pre-filled with the corresponding address(es). This is a quick way to troubleshoot problems or locate key information based on the address you are interested in.
